Christchurch Boys Highschool - Main Block

Christchurch Boys High School, an important educational institution, continues to thrive as a live educational environment. it secures the building's future through major seismic upgrades and meticulous heritage restoration, while also introducing new teaching spaces to meet the school's ongoing needs.

About this project

Major refurbishment on a Category 1 Heritage building including deferred maintenance, earthquake repairs, seismic strengthening, upgrading of building services, and new extensions.

Our approach

The robust seismic upgrades being undertaken are sensitive to the buildings heritage fabric with a strong focus on higher risk areas such as brickwork veneer and gables.

The heritage red brick was mapped out into categories of risk for assessment and scope definition. Once scope were defined, old bricks were carefully removed and new heritage approved bricks were installed in line with heritage methodologies developed in conjunction with Southbase and the consultant groups.

The heritage stonework was historically painted with lead paint. Extensive lead removal works were undertaken to uncover the stone and define the scope of remediation. Once scope was defined, the stonework was either remediated insitu or cut out and new approved stone work was reinstated in line with heritage methodologies developed.

The exterior and the interior of this project had stonework to be remediated by this method. There was also extensive and detailed restoration work around all the existing window openings.
