The MPI Plant Health and Environment Capability (PHEC) Facility (also referred to as the MPI Plant Health and Environmental Laboratory or PHEL) is a state-of-the-art secure bio-containment laboratory and research campus being developed for the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) in Mount Albert, Auckland.
About the project
This is a substantial four-level facility. It includes:
- Post-Entry Quarantine (PEQ) greenhouses.
- Four-storey tissue culture and containment laboratories.
- PC3 laboratories and offices.
- The PC3 Greenhouse component has significant complexities related to containment while also requiring optimal growing conditions.
The facility is designed to uphold the utmost levels of security and safety to support long-term resilience. It features highly adaptable and flexible spaces to accommodate growth in New Zealand’s plant-based industries and to address the increasing threat of biosecurity incursions.
